Bio

Devin Drown is an Associate Professor of Biology at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His research takes a One Health approach to address questions related to ecosystem change. His group has been using emerging next-generation sequencing tools to explore soil microbial communities of the Subarctic, understand the diversity of antibiotic resistance in disturbed environments, and for the detection of emerging pathogens. Over the past three years, he has been a project leader expanding genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Alaska. His research team has a commitment to broadening participation in biomedical related research. He uses Nanopore hackathons to enable undergraduates to analyze next-generation sequence data using bioinformatic pipelines to answer questions in genomics.
